   This railroad was founded by one of the only railroad builders who graduated from medical school, Thomas C. Durant(1820-1885).  After being forced into a stock speculatory firm by circumstance he soon earned a reputation for being smart and succesfull in his business ways.  He was regarded reckless because of his willingness to  take risks and that is exactly what this railroad was, a tremendous risk.
